Art Director

UK Remote or West Midlands Based – Birmingham/Worcestershire Area

Role and Purpose:

We are seeking a highly creative and experienced Art Director to lead the visual development of our next AAA game title. The ideal candidate will have a strong artistic vision, excellent leadership skills, and a passion for creating immersive gaming experiences.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and maintain the artistic vision for the game, ensuring a cohesive and high-quality visual style. Create and oversee the visual style guide to ensure consistency across all visual elements.
  • Provide creative direction and feedback on all visual aspects of the game, including environments, characters, and UI.
  • Lead and mentor a team of artists, including concept artists, 3D modelers, animators, and UI artists and Implement and maintain a robust review and feedback process to ensure continuous improvement.
  • Conduct regular team meetings and one-on-one sessions to provide feedback and support, encouraging the team to explore and adopt innovative approaches to game art.
  • Foster a collaborative and inclusive team environment that encourages creativity and innovation.
  • Work closely with game designers, producers, and other departments to ensure the art direction aligns with the overall game design and narrative.
  • Collaborate with the technical team to ensure the art assets are optimized for performance and meet technical requirements.
  • Communicate effectively with stakeholders to present and justify artistic decisions.
  • Oversee the production of all visual assets, ensuring they meet the highest standards of quality and consistency.
  • Review and approve all art assets before they are integrated into the game.
  • Stay updated with industry trends and technologies to push the boundaries of game art and deliver cutting-edge visuals.
  • Experiment with new tools, techniques, and workflows to enhance the visual quality and efficiency of the art production process.
  • Work with Producers to manage the art production schedule, ensuring timely delivery of high-quality assets.
  • Coordinate with producers to allocate resources effectively and meet project milestones.
  • Monitor and report on the progress of the art team, addressing any issues or bottlenecks promptly.
  • Build and maintain relationships with existing clients, whilst using the support of the art team to deliver confident and consistent high-quality delivery to projects.
  • Collaborate with new potential clients to understand their specifications and requirements to further secure more projects for the company.

Requirements:

  • A minimum of 7+ years of experience as an Artist in the video game industry, with a proven track record of contributing to successful game projects.
  • A comprehensive portfolio showcasing your Artistic visions and/or previous AAA titles, including examples of various Art styles and relevant game-related work.
  • Proven leadership and management skills, with the ability to inspire and motivate a team of Artists to achieve excellence.
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills to assess and improve art styles, art direction and player feedback.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate seamlessly within cross-disciplinary teams and provide effective guidance.
  • A deep passion for video games and a keen understanding of art impact on players immersion.
  • Expertise in art software such as 3ds Max or Blender, as well as experience with game engines such as Unreal Engine or Unity.
  • A strong artistic vision and creative sensibility, with the ability to develop and communicate a cohesive art style that aligns with the project’s artistic direction.
  • Ability to adapt to changing project requirements and priorities, and to work effectively in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.

Desirable Skills

  • Experience in pitch deck creation and presenting.
